What is beef stew? Print E-mail
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A stew is a combination of solid food ingredients that have been cooked in water or other water-based liquid, typically by simmering, and that are then served without being drained.

Ingredients in a stew can include any combination of vegetables (potatoes, beans, etc.), fruits (such as peppers and tomatoes), meat, poultry, sausages and seafood. While water can be used as the stew-cooking liquid, wine, stock, and beer are also common. Seasoning and flavorings may also be added. Stews are typically cooked at a relatively low temperature (simmered, not boiled), to allow flavors to marry.

WOW Grinds commentary on beef stew...

Beef stew is eaten all over the world, but it seems local folks take beef stew small kine more serious.

Local style beef stew usually consists of tender cubed beef with chunks of onion, celery, carrot and potatoes. The sabao (sauce) part is usually more reddish tomatoey tasting or more brownish beefy tasting. Or somewhere in between. Sometimes some local stew is slightly sweet, but I not too sure what causes that...maybe they put dash sugar inside?

Some things that I've found go good with beef stew are rice, laulau, mac salad, kim chee, dolop of mayonnaise, scrambled eggs, takuan, Tabasco sauce, fried fish. That's all I can think of right now.

Some things that I don't really like with beef stew are crackers, dinner rolls, stew by itself. No get me wrong, I still eat the stew if it's served this way, but get rice is nice.
