#1 Leonard's Malasada Judge 1 - Taste 8...Texture 7...Presentation 8. "Traditional" presentation. Crispy outside appearance, soft inside. Little mushy, but could be due to reheat. Doughy, but not as doughy as A. Judge 2 - Taste 8...Texture 8...Presentation 8. They look puffy and lighter in color. I liked the lightness and airiness of the malasadas. Tastes really good warm! :) Judge 3 - Taste 9...Texture 8...Presentation 9. This looks perfectly round with just the right golden color. Not to sugary. Not too much of a dough taste. Not too thick. Not too airy. Judge 4 - Taste 6...Texture 5...Presentation 8. Looks more like a "traditional" malasada, IMO. Taste and texture a little more doughy and heavier than A. Second time around-tastes better heated, but 2nd one was raw dough in the middle so that ruined the texture and taste. Judge 5 - Taste 7...Texture 9...Presentation 9. More on the chewy side. Oily aftertaste. A little mushy. Judge 6 - Taste 8...Texture 8...Presentation 9. Traditional looking. A little dense (chewy). Judge 7 - Taste 7...Texture 7...Presentation 6. Nice and doughy. I like the cross hatching.
#2 Agnes' Portuguese Bake Shop Judge 1 - Taste 7...Texture 6...Presentation 4. Overcooked donut appearance. Too doughy, heavy. Not too greasy. Novel taste. Judge 2 - Taste 6...Texture 6...Presentation 7. Looks dark in color, kinda looks like a sugar donut. Kind of rubbery and has a slight sourish taste. Judge 3 - Taste 7...Texture 5...Presentation 3. Looks more crispy and dark in color. The texture seems thicker than what I'm used to. Not as airy. Not too impressed. Just OK. Judge 4 - Taste 9...Texture 8...Presentation 6. Looks dark and has a hole in the middle, little off putting. Liked the initial crunch. Texture is nice/crunchy outside but no aftertaste which is good. Judge 5 - Taste 10...Texture 9...Presentation 7. Looks like a donut! Nice, even texture in the middle. Judge 6 - Taste 8...Texture 7...Presentation 6. More cake like, kinda chewy. Better hot. Looks like a donut. Judge 7 - Taste 5...Texture 4...Presentation 4. Hole in the middle? Slightly hard, slightly heavy.
#3 Champion Malasada Judge 1 - Taste 7...Texture 6...Presentation 9. "Traditional" presentation. Crispy outside appearance. Soft inside (similar to B). Airy. Skin kinda tough, chewy. Little sour. Judge 2 - Taste 4...Texture 3...Presentation 6. Puffy and round looking. Very hard to cut in to. Tangy tasting and very sugary. Taste like they added vinegar. Very chewy and rubbery. Judge 3 - Taste 8...Texture 7...Presentation 8. This one is even more round, big and puffy. Compared to the last two, this has lots of air. I had a doughy taste afterward. It was tough to cut with the knife, hard to bite it. So much sugar covers it. Judge 4 - Taste 7...Texture 7...Presentation 9. Looks bigger, puffier and sugar a little more evenly distributed. Texture is chewy. Tastes a little "off" kind of tangy. Tastes better heated (second time). Judge 5 - Taste 8...Texture 8...Presentation 8. Lots of "air" in the middle. Judge 6 - Taste 6...Texture 6...Presentation 9. Too much air inside, did not like the dough taste. Judge 7 - Taste 5...Texture 6...Presentation 5. Malasada skin: doughy filling ratio too high (skin>filling).
