try the outer islands!

I LOVE the website! But you know what? Your only tapping into a small percentage of all the good eats....what about the outer islands? Here's some suggestions:

miso butterfish (seaside/big island)

Pancakes (ken's pancake house/Big Island, Wailana's/Oahu)

Oxtail soup

Manju (home made bakery/maui)

loco moco (cafe 100/big island, nori's/big island)

Mushroom burger

mochi (2ladies kitchen/big island)

just something to THINK about =)
You have to include

Your site is hilarious. I can't wait to see the future results. When you do your KimChee challenge, you have to include the KimChee from the Korean store that is on the side street from Fort Street Mall. They sell the KimChee to go in plastic containers. It is so good you can eat it as a snack. I do, no rice just KimChee. VERY ONO!
don't forget

Kalbi
Baked Manapua
everyone's favorite...
pizza pirate (66.8.235.xxx) 2008-08-18 17:03:57

Everyone loves pizza. I can't wait to see what people's opinions would be... I would love to see the battles between:
Antonio's
Bost on's
Magoo's
Round Table
CPK
La Pizza Rina
Pizza Hut
Papa Johns
Dominos
Tombstone (wildcard)
ilikegrind 2008-08-19 06:17:16

That's a cool idea cause I don't think we have any supa good pizza in Hawaii when compared to what you can get on the east or west coast. I like this little pizza place in Torrance, CA called Bonello's Pizza. They're family owned and said their pizza sauce is an old family recipe. We always make a stop there when visiting LA. Hopefully we get comparable pizza shop in Hawaii soon.

Kalua Pork Loco Moco (xtra gravy on the side)

Gau Gee (like at Waimalu Chop Suey!)

Kaluaporklocomoco. I like the name. Thanks for the suggestions. Kalua pork loco moco...I never heard of that. It sounds incredible. Where do they serve that? We'll keep you posted on the planning of the kim chee battle...you sound like you have a highly developed kim chee palette.

If you guys do kim chee, I HIGHLY recommend Palama Super Market (1670 Makaloa Street) and Eastern Paradise @ King and Keeaumoku.

Eastern Paradise is actually a chinese restaurant but the owner was raised in korea and he makes kim chee that rivals Palama Market's. The kim chee is a free side that comes with your meal.
Garlic Shrimp
Alyce Masuda (24.143.227.xxx) 2008-11-02 06:31:56

Wow-no one's mentioned "garlic shrimp". There's plenty of shrimp trucks that everyone raves about and Andy's in Honolulu makes it slightly more convenient to get this dish instead of trucking over to the North Shore/Kahuku. In addition, Kapiolani's Community College's Saturday farmer's market also dishes out this fav of the islands. It'll be one stinker of a battle. ;-)

yeah...we never think of doing garlic shrimp truck taste off yet. that's a good idea. Where's Andy's in Honolulu?

BTW-my hubby (Kendall Lee) and I will be in Oahu from the mainland next week and we would love to participate in a "battle". Let us know by email and we'll be there!

ilikegrind 2008-11-18 05:45:14

Thanks for the dessert suggestions yummyinmytummy. I like the name too. Many of our female friends have been asking us to do a dessert challenge. Maybe malasadas or dobash cake will be next. I like the shave ice idea. We're still trying to figure out how to transport it to the tasting location before it melts. Any ideas?
Hmm...
yummyinmytummy (66.75.108.xxx) 2008-11-19 02:14:51

Hehe, I love how you wrote female friends have been asking for dessert =) I put in this comment before I read how the blind taste tests are done. I don't know how this may affect 'syrup distribution', but the best way I can think of is to dump the shave ice in a container and put it in a cooler with dry ice. I would LOVE to be a part of the malasada or dobash cake challenge!!!
ilikegrind 2008-11-19 03:46:09

Thanks for the neat idea for shave ice tasting. I'll have to try experiment with the dry ice in a cooler and see what happens. If it works, that would be the ultimate taste test. Will let you know if we do malasadas or dobash soon.
Thanks!
yummyinmytummy (66.75.108.xxx) 2008-11-19 05:51:14

Ooh so excited. I'll be drooling... err I mean waiting =
Hey...
yummyinmytummy (66.75.108.xxx) 2008-11-19 18:17:27

Why do I not see Macaroni Salad?!?!?!
And Saimin?
And Kalua Pig?
Can't have local battles without those!

Ooh, and definitely Garlic Chicken!
And Corned Beef Hash!
And Pancakes!
(Yes I'm hungry!)

Po'omai (74.61.205.xxx) 2009-05-25 11:53:54

I told my dad about this site and he wanted me to suggest you to do a taste test for the best roast pork and roast duck... the chinese kine style roast pork not the one with the gravy!!!! thanks
ilikegrind 2009-05-25 16:03:20

Tanks for your Father's suggestion Po'omai. That will be battle worth doing. I think maybe Nam Fong in Chinatown might have the best roast duck. My friend told me the Chinese restaurant in Nuuanu shopping plaza get the best roast pork. What you tink?
outer island
Po'omai (74.61.205.xxx) 2009-05-25 11:55:53

if you ever get a chance to do an outer island taste testing, my boyfirend and I would love to be a part of it. Shoot us an email.
ilikegrind 2009-05-25 16:05:26

Hopefully we can find the funds to get out to the neighbor islands one day. I think they would give the Oahu places hard rubs on plenty different grinds. Will keep you posted if we get out to the neighbor islands.
