One of the best maki sushi IMO. Rice seasoned just right and cooked perfect. Fillings are ono. Good balance of filling to rice. Nori not too chewy. This is the maki sushi they sometimes get at huli huli chicken fundraisers. I pretty sure they do only catering and small orders like $50 worth of bentos for example. They got mad at me one time when I tried ordering one bento for lunch...they wen hang up on me. Call-in, they fax you a menu and you pick-up only. No dine in. It's in a bus' up warehouse in the back alley and no more signage. They get all kine other local Japanese grinds da kine Grandma used to make. Their bento is winnah and cheap. Mochiko chicken is ono too.

Fat Boy's Local Drive-in Waipio - 94-1221 Ka Uka Blvd. (By Costco) Kailua - 301(A) Hahani St. (Near Don Quijote) 680-7520 (Waipio) 263-2697 (Kailua)
One killah bento for only $5.75. You get one nice layer rice on the bottom w/ furikake (rice was cooked perfectly, not mochi mushy), takuan, spam, hot dog, mahi w/ tartar sauce, teri beef and garlic chicken. Highlight #1 was the teri beef...sliced thin, well marinated, tender, w/ extra teri sauce on top. Highlight #2 was the garlic chicken...light crispy crust, moist inside, tender (not chewy), flavor was little bit spicy...maybe they use sriracha sauce. I want more of this.

The Kim Chee Khaos took place on October 18, 2008, the same day as the Limu Poke Leviathan. Mahalos again to the folks at Luana Hills Country Club for letting us use their facilities. 8 of the best kim chees from the most hole in the wall shops to the popular supermarket brands battled it out in a WOW Grinds Blind Taste Test. The smell of kim chee was intoxicating...in a good way...depending on how much you could handle. The results and rankings are coming soon.

Mac 24-7 Bar & Restaurant Hilton Waikiki Prince Kuhio Hotel Lobby 921-5564 Open 24/7
This is their Mac Daddy Pancakes. You get 3 pancakes that are 14 inches each. Bigger than my head. They sprinkle the kine ono apple crisp topping on top. Comes with 4 syrups, maple, coconut, guava and pineapple. Sometimes food this big is all show no go, but this behemoth was a pretty ono tasting pancake. Was kinda expensive, but you going have left overs for about 2-3 days so she balance out. I wonder how big the spatula they use for flip em.

Roayl Kitchen "Home of the Baked Manapua" Chinese Cultural Plaza 524-4461
Yeah...dis is the baked manapua shop, but they make this fresh roasted turkey sandwich Tuesdays and Thursdays. I think they roast the turkey Chinese style, cause kinda taste like the roast pork seasonings with the crispy edges. They make the sandwich like this...shred the meat in to bite size pieces, drizzle on their secret pink-ish/orange-ish salad dressing, put some green leaf/Manoa lettuce (depending what's available that day) and put it on their own fresh baked sweet bread roll. $2.50 each. Go early or call in a order because they only roast so many turkeys and when they run out...pau. Winnah for breakfast.

You gotta sit at the diner counter to get this. It's their popular butter roll, which is already baked in buttery goodness, sliced in half, then slathered with more butter, then fried on the griddle until it's crispy. You can get this included in your meal at no additional cost by telling the server, "one scoop rice (rather than two) and one fried butter roll please." It's worth sacrificing one scoop rice for the fried butter roll. No forget to slather on the hot pink jelly before you eat em. I not sure what the jelly flavor is, but maybe it's just hot pink flavor. Taste kinda like their fruit punch. This is a melt in your mouth experience.

Nate, a WOWGrinds reader, suggested we combine the scores from the Manapua Madness and the Pork Hash Passion to find the single best manapua shop. Thanks for the creative suggestion Nate. Libby was the #1 manapua and Aiea Manapua and Snacks had the #1 pork hash, but who is the best overall? So we combined the scores and here's how it came out. Do these combined scores give us the "single best" manapua shop or are there other manapua shop goodies that need to be considered? What you figgah? |

Minato Japanese Restaurant & Izakaya 930 Hauoli Street Telephone: 808.956.1322
I think they said was homemade sake ice cream. First time I had this in my life. Kinda was like guri guri...creamy, small kine sweet and little bit icy at the same time. Mild sake flavor, but just enough for make you say "that IS sake ice cream." Was about $3.50. Was good. Good service too.
