Toshi's Delicatessen
Kalihi, across from Kapalama Post Office 841-6634
IMO one of the best okazuya on the island. They been serving ono grinds for something like 30-40 years. Their shoyu chicken is homestyle like Grandma used to make. Tasty salty sweet flavor...little bit more on the salty side. Tender juicy moist. Taste like they cook em oven-baked style cause get that glazed look. You can ask for "sauce on the rice" and they give em. Go early cause if they run out, then all pau. I think they open 4am on weekdays, but I not sure. Mo better you call and ask.

| The Malasada Melee took place on December 7, 2008. Three Godfathers of malasada soul duked it out in a WOW Grinds Blind Taste Test. It was a nasty fight...granulated sugar and hot frying oil was flying all over my house. But in the end, at least we were one step closer to settling the longstanding debate about who makes the best malasadas...Leonard's, Champion or Agnes'. Most surprising was the judge's rankings didn't come out exactly same as the online voting poll results. Click "read more" to see the results. |

The Gazebo at Macy's Macy's Pearlridge and Windward Mall
My good friend told me about this grinds. Might not be the best fried chicken, but still ono...and it's different cause the cook said they marinate em in one honey batter before frying (hence the name Honey Dipt Chicken). The flavor is small kine mildly sweet and mostly salty. Light and crispy outside and really tender moist on the inside. Made to order. The chicken portion is small kine small so mo better get the side order corn bread so you full after. You gotta specify "grilled corn bread please." This will trigger them to slather on the butter, then plop em on the griddle until crispy. Rich, dense and tasty corn bread. Little bit expensive at around $9 for this combo.

Foodland Deli
Various Locations on Oahu, Maui, Kauai and Big Island Some locations no more deli
Watch out KJ's cause some people been talking that Foodland's fried chicken is just as good as yours...and way cheaper too. When I went, was on sale for $7.99 for 10 thigh pieces. They get wings and breast pieces too for different prices. Light, crispy, flaky outside with tasty flavor. Almost same like KJ's flavor. Maybe they use the same flour dredge mix? It's not too greasy, little bit on the chewy side, but not hard. If you lucky enough to get it fresh out the fryer, then more ono. Supa ono with hot rice and kim chee. If I can't get out to Kaneohe for KJ's fried chicken, the Foodland fried chicken is a satisfying substitute.

The Malasada Melee took place on December 7, 2008. The three Godfathers of malasda artistry (Agnes's, Champion and Leonard's) went all out in a WOW Grinds Blind Taste Test. Three malasdas enter...one malasada leave. The result was not quite what we all expected and it wasn't exactly in-line with the online voting poll either. Btw, you can still vote for who you think should win.

The Alley at Aiea Bowl
99-115 Aiea Heights Drive Aiea Heights Shopping Center 486-3499
This is similar to plate lunch garlic chicken, but might be better. They said it's "award winning" on the menu, but not sure what award. Boneless deep fried chicken strips dipped in their special sauce. Light crispy outside and moist tender on the inside. Cooked just right...not overcooked or fried hard or chewy. Sauce is flavorful sweet teriyaki style...not overly garlicky. Small kine expensive...around $8.50 for one plate, but pretty big portion...make me pretty full. I like the teri-sauce soaked shredded cabbage on the bottom. Better than Sugoi or Mitsuken?

The Alley at Aiea Bowl

Watch out Kaka`ako Kitchen cuz this bad boy might knock you off the #1 hamburger steak spot. Homemade (not prefab) patties. The patty is not too hard, not too mushy, but just right. Flavor is meaty with mild burnt taste from the grill marks. Yeah, I think they actually grill it on an open fire. Gravy is made from scratch. Rich, smooth and ono. Nothing better than scratch gravy. They no fool around with the powder mix stuff. Small kine expensive at about $8.95 for one plate. Huge portion with two 1/2 pound patties. I can barely finish. Best eaten on the spot for the full effect. There's a whole lotta love in this HS.

Champion Malasadas
1926 South Beretania St.
947-8778
Might be the best malasada on Oahu. Light, airy and moist on the inside. Crispy and slightly chewy on the outside. Not too greasy. Not too eggy. Fresh made to order. Legend has it that this guy improved the Leonard's Malasada recipe by letting the dough rise before frying it. They used to be in Kalihi by Mayor Wright Homes, but now they on Beretania, just Ewa from the rental equipment store that posts the funny sayings above their entrance. Only 60 cents each. Try the breakfast special with 2 eggs, choice of meat and 2 malasadas. Best tasting fresh out the fryer. Maybe we do a malasada challenge next. |

Korean Bbq Corner (Iwilei)
a.k.a. "Mamasan's" or "The Fried Rice Place"
Across from K-Mart
818 Iwilei Rd. #E Honolulu, HI 96817 528-0311
These guys advertise their fried rice as one of their specialty dishes. Tasty and flavorful. Small kine sweet...little bit salty...just right. Rice well-coated. Made fresh to order. Good amount of meat and other stuffs inside. The owner said his fried rice is oyster sauce-based which gives it the special ono flavor. He said it's different from Side Street Inn fried rice which is hoisin sauce-based giving it sweetness, and Kapiolani Coffee Shop fried rice which is shoyu-based giving it the salty flavor. Nice size portion of fried rice for about $6. Might be able to dethrone Kapiolani Coffee Shop as best fried rice.
