Best Chicken Katsu - Final Results and Rankings

The Chicken Katsu Classic took place on July 26, 2009. Nine of Oahu's best chicken katsu clashed in a WOW Grinds Blind Taste Test. For those that voted in the preliminary regional poll you helped select the top chicken katsu from each region on Oahu providing a wide range of ono katsu competitors. Unfortunately, the Honolulu region competitor, Sugoi's, was closed on Sunday, so we went with the second place vote-getter in the Honolulu region...Kent's Drive-in. In the end, the Central Oahu regional competitor, Young's Kalbee, won the first place spot by a supa narrow margin. Congratulations Central Oahu! A sub-battle that arose out of the regional online voting poll involved a duel between two different L&L locations...the original L&L on Liliha St. and the L&L at the Pearl City Wal-mart (the Leeward region competitor). The original L&L gracefully defeated the L&L Pearl City location hinting that maybe the original L&L never share all its secrets with the other locations. Anyways, click read more to see the full results table.

The Chicken Katsu Classic - Competitors

The Chicken Katsu Classic took place on Sunday, July 26, 2009. The competitors are displayed below for your viewing pleasure. The results are coming soon.

Based on the online vote, Keneke's, Kent's Drive-in, L&L Pearl City and Young's Kalbee represented their respective districts in this classic blind taste test. We want to note that Sugoi was originally voted to represent the Honolulu district, but they closed on Sundays, so we had to go with the 2nd place vote-getter in the Honolulu district...Kent's Drive-in. The 14 judges were everyday local folks who love food. Some of them were self-proclaimed chicken katsu experts citing their up close and personal relationship with their beloved chicken katsu. Making this battle extra interesting was the inclusion of 4 judges who were visiting from Virginia. We thought it would be interesting to see if our Virginia judges, who weren't raised eating these local chicken katsu competitors, would rank the competitors in the same way as the local judges. This might help explain if the judges are picking the chicken katsu they're used to (i.e. I was raised on Grace's katsu, so that taste the best to me), or are they picking the one that actually taste the best...even if they not familiar with the taste? It also might answer the question, "is ono chicken katsu...ono chicken katsu...no matter where the katsu consumer grew up?"

Diner's Drive-in

The Chicken Katsu Classic -Vote For Your Faves To Compete

We know how serious us local folks are about our chicken katsu. And we know get supa plenty places for winnah chicken katsu out there, but we only know the places we know. On top of that, we like make sure to include places from all over the island and not just the areas we go plenty. So we decided to approach this titanic battle in a slightly different way. This challenge will have 3 rounds as follows...

ROUND 1
We've already completed this round. To ensure that the biggest names in local chicken katsu are entered in to this challenge, we've guaranteed spots for Grace's Inn, Diner's Drive-In and L&L (Liliha). Please do not add these places to the voting polls.

ROUND 2
Via online voting (see below), your personal chicken katsu-ing experience will determine the #1 seeded chicken katsu from each region on Oahu. The #1 seed from each district will represent their district in an all out chicken katsu cage match. Voting will close on 6/19/09.

The regional voting polls are divided up as follows...
Leeward District (Makaha to Nanakuli to Waipahu to Pearl City)
Central District (Salt Lake to Moanalua to Aiea to Mililani to Wahiawa to Wailua)
Honolulu District (Kalihi to Waikiki to Kaimuki to Hawaii Kai)
Windward District (Kahuku to Kaneohe to Kailua to Waimanalo)

ROUND 3
The competitors will slug it out in a WOW Grinds Blind Taste Test.

Hopefully this process will give us the ultimate battle that our beloved chicken katsu plate lunch deserves. We might even have a courageous home cooked chicken katsu risk his neck on the battle field. Brah, you get "alas" (as in "karang your alas").

The polls are set up below. You can vote for as many places as you want within each district. If we didn't include your favorite chicken katsu in the polls, put it in the "other" box or leave a comment under the article with your suggestion and we'll add it to the poll. In the case of plate lunch chains (i.e. L&L), if you feel other locations makes better katsu than the original L&L (Liliha), we'll add that to the polls too. We might have several L&L locations competing against each other...siblng rivalry. Lastly, we are looking for plate lunch/diner chicken katsu and not fancy sit down restaurant kine. Sit down restaurants might have unfair advantage so we trying to leave them out of this fight for now. Now touch gloves and let's get it on!
