What is beef stew?

Local style beef stew usually consists of tender cubed beef with chunks of onion, celery, carrot and potatoes. The sabao (sauce) part is usually more reddish tomatoey tasting or more brownish beefy tasting. Or somewhere in between. Sometimes some local stew is slightly sweet, but I not too sure what causes that...maybe they put dash sugar inside?

Some things that I've found go good with beef stew are rice, laulau, mac salad, kim chee, dolop of mayonnaise, scrambled eggs, takuan, Tabasco sauce, fried fish. That's all I can think of right now.

Some things that I don't really like with beef stew are crackers, dinner rolls, stew by itself. No get me wrong, I still eat the stew if it's served this way, but get rice is nice.
